| | Harry Kirk |
| Harry spent some time during his national service in Kenya then came back and resumed his career at Altrincham Exchange working alongside the likes of Bob Quayle, Jack Taylor and Don Dumbar with the level 1 being A.T.Jones and George Stephenson. Harry was a TO in the exchange and spent his time between the exchange and the Test Desk handling customer complaints and dishing out repairs to field staff. He spoke at machine gun speed and it got faster the more excited he became, making it difficult to tell what he was saying at times. At this time he was a football pools collector a job he did for many years, he was also the POEU Union rep. He was always quite cynical of management decisions which he frequently questioned as he thought he new better. He progressed from TO to TOA and was quite knowledgeable in fact you could consider him to have been considered as an expert on TXE 4 the new exchanges being phased in, and was very involved in the severe problems which occurred when they opened Ringway Exchange, only the second TXE4 to be brought on line in Manchester South Telephone Area. This led to his promotion to level 1 on TXE 4 Exchanges in Manchester South Area. He was a man who always had a good sense of humour and integrity; he was also well respected by both staff and higher management. He was also very interested in finance and became a bit of a wizard at investments etc a trait which has manifested itself in his son, he should probably have been an accountant and without a doubt he would have been very successful. He will be greatly missed by his ex BT pals who meet every month for a noggin and natter at Mersey Farm Restaurant. |
