rose.jpg Farewell Cliff Maher
Cliff actually passed away in November 2019. It only came to light When Martin Smith bumped into Cliff's wife recently.

Mike Ku added.

Cliff used to be a TO on Rutherford Trunk Auto many years ago before getting promotion into management. I believe he went into Planning in region and retired as a Tier 2. In Rutherford he was on the old rota team. I have asked Ron Roberts if he has any pictures but he did not. He also used to work with Bernie Foy in planning and when I spoke to Bernie last week he had nothing.

It's sad when a colleague death goes unnoticed, his funeral would have pre-dated the current Covid restrictions as well.

If anyone has a photo of Cliff we can add it to the notice and our Roll of Honour. Just email it back to us or upload it on our photo page

wreath.jpg Farewell Pete Hogan
Harry Bannister contacted us about the sad death of his friend Pete.

My old pal, Pete Hogan sadly passed away on the 14th April from cancer. Like me, he joined the GPO, as was, in September 1963 as a Y3YC and we eventually ended up working together from the mid sixties onwards in Dial House, firstly in Pioneer and then Rampart, until Pete left the company in about 1973 to work for XCEL installing comms equipment in bookmakers and similar.

After he left, we still continued to meet up, both as a twosome to play squash or to go pubbing or clubbing, or as a foursome with our wives.

This was all brought to a halt when I was promoted and moved to Oswestry but after we both retired I got in touch and we'd meet up as a sixsome, with Al Jones and his wife or as a foursome, when Al moved to Yorkshire.

Pete's wife passed away in December, 2017 but we continued to meet up for lunch until he was diagnosed with cancer in mid 2020.

I've no idea as to the funeral arrangements but given the current covid restrictions I'm certain it will be just be family and close friends but I'll let you know the details as soon as they become available.

This is the last photo I have of the three of us from July, 2016 with from left to right: Al Jones died Dec. 2019, Pete Hogan, Harry Bannister.

Check back for the funeral details in case the current restrictions are eased.

buzby.jpg Karl Highcock hits the button!
After over 41 and a half years' service I have decided to hang up my co-axial crimpers and leave the company on 31st of March 2021.
07-08-1979 to 31-03-2021

I have enjoyed every minute almost of my time here but now is the time to let my hair down and move onto pastures new.

Hopefully I've still got many years left to go out and enjoy myself and that's what I intend to do.

Got lots of decorating to do and I am planning a new bathroom and also a kitchen extension.

That's it really. Thanks for the memories stay safe and GOODBYE. It's been a wild ride!

No leaving do I'm afraid. Boris says so.

Cheers Karl.

wreath.jpg Farewell Syd McCarthy
Sarah MaCarthy has been in touch with the sad news of the passing of her dad Syd.

I am very sorry to tell you of the passing away of Syd McCarthy on 6 January 2021. He was nearly 88 and passed away peacefully in hospital.

Syd was BT man and boy. He joined the Post Office as a ‘Messenger Boy’ aged 15 and thereafter worked as a jointer then a TO I remember his callouts in the middle of the night to Edgeley Exchange in the 1970s and early 1980s and finally as the Level One manager of Dalton Exchange at Dial House until he retired.

His musical talents for the POEU Brass Band for which from memory he played tuba and possibly cornet and euphonium in the 1970s are captured on vinyl and the record is now in the very proud possession of his family. Syd trialled for Manchester United’s Youth Team and he remained a lifelong fan of United.

People who worked for Syd found him ‘firm and fair’ as a manager and he cared tirelessly for his beloved wife Barbara until the end of her life a few years ago. He was also a loving and devoted dad and grandpa and is deeply missed by his children and grandchildren.

The funeral will be held on Thurs 11 February 2021 It would be nice to see some of his colleagues there.

Due to the current restrictions only 30 people can attend the funeral. There is space for a few of Syd's colleagues to attend.

Anyone wishing to attend please get in touch on our contact page.

You will need to supply contact details for the government's Track and Trace Service.

Please include your name address and a Phone number so It can be passed on to the family.
