mike.jpg John Ley calls it a day
But no mention of a leaving doo!

John wrote

After over 39 years, today is my last day with BT / Openreach.

As some of you may be aware I’ve struggled with my back / mobility
over the last 12 months, therefore I’ve decided to call it a day &
enjoy my retirement.

Relax

Enjoy myself

Try something new

Invite friends for food / beer

Read a new book

Expand my horizons – Australia

Make plans to travel

Embrace my freedom

Nap often

Take time for myself.

I started with Post Office Telecommunications, progressed through
British Telecom and leave via Openreach Limited.

Despite initial concerns about working longer hours than my previous
job, I soon realised that I had made one of the better decisions of my life. After signing the ‘Duty of the Post Office Personal Declaration’ at Highland House, I reported to Swinton Exchange to be greeted with tea and toast. From there I moved Walkden Exchange where I worked for 10 years, a great period of my working life where I learnt to repair anything mechanical / electrical – including Strowger switches - whilst listening to Geoff S and John A. recite Monty Python sketches.

In 1989 I moved in Dial House working for Steve Lee on System X
Maintenance and 1991 was the given the ‘opportunity’ - despite being
the 2nd youngest Technical Officer on Team – of managing the Team I
was from. A great bunch of interesting / challenging characters like
Geoff Sale, Ron Mitchell. Harvey Derbyshire, Brian Williams, Mike
Newbury & Eddie Smith. From there I progressed through the following
roles.

1996 - 1997 Field, Church Street, Manchester

1997 - 2000 Core Network Field Manager. Warrington

2000 - 2002 Network Power Manager. Dial House Manchester

2002 – 2007 Network Operations Manager - Switch and Telex Services Dial House Manchester

2007 – 2009 Field Engineering Manager – Manchester

2009 - 2015 Transition Manager NW / NE England

2015 - Present Openreach DCoE Manager,Lancaster House, Liverpool and Ashton.

The stories to tell and people I have worked with are too numerous to bore you all with in my final email , so I would just like to thank you all for the friendship, help and support you have given me during my career – it’s been a blast.

My final thanks goes to BT for helping to fund my season tickets at
United, who I have watched for 50 years this year.

Cheers,

John Ley
